Which Schengen country should you apply to? The main destination rule
You can't pick the 'easiest' consulate. Here's the official rule, with examples, and what to do when your nights are split evenly.

A Schengen visa lets you travel across many European countries, but only one country's consulate handles your application. Which one is set by the EU Visa Code, not by preference.
The rule in three steps
- Visiting one country only? Apply to that country.
- Visiting several? Apply to your main destination, the country where you spend the most time (or, in some cases, where the main purpose of the trip is).
- No main destination? Apply to the country whose external border you cross first to enter the Schengen area.
Examples
- 5 nights in Italy, 3 in France: apply to Italy.
- 4 nights in Spain, 4 in Portugal, entering through Spain: apply to Spain, unless the purpose of your trip makes Portugal the main destination.
- A business conference in Germany for 2 days, then 4 nights of holiday in Austria: purpose can matter here. Ask the consulate if you're unsure.
Why it matters
Applying to the wrong country can lead to a refusal or questions at the border. Choosing a consulate only because it seems faster or easier is exactly what the rule is designed to prevent.
