How to write a visa cover letter that consulates can trust

What to include, what to leave out, and why facts beat flattery. A simple structure you can follow.

A cover letter explains your trip in plain words: who you are, why you're travelling, how long, who pays, and why you'll return home. It doesn't replace documents; it connects them.

A simple structure

  • Opening: the visa you're applying for and your travel dates.
  • Purpose: tourism, visiting family or business, in one or two sentences.
  • Plan: the cities you'll visit, in order, matching your itinerary.
  • Funds: who is paying, matching your bank statements or sponsor letter.
  • Ties: your job, family or studies that bring you back.
  • Closing: a list of the documents attached.

What to avoid

  • Figures or claims your documents don't support.
  • Emotional appeals or promises. Facts are more convincing.
  • Copying a template word for word. Consulates read many of them.
